Jobs in Hospitality

Basically defined, hospitality is kindness in welcoming strangers or guests.  Hospitality employment generally refers to casino, restaurant, resort, club, catering, and hotel careers.  Hospitality jobs cover a broad range of services, so before beginning a restaurant or hotel job search, it is recommended to carefully research all aspects of the industry.

Hospitality careers require courtesy and congeniality at all times.  Most hospitality careers have opportunities available to accommodate all schedules.  General laborers commonly work rather short four to six hour shifts, while management careers mandate 12 hour shifts on a regular basis.  Large facilities generally offer comfortable working conditions, and are commonly found in highly populated areas.  Hospitality occupations experience large holiday and/or seasonal peaks in business, which often creating hectic working conditions.  Off seasons may be slow and dull, requiring less employees to service a facility.

Restaurant employment may range from hostess to waitress or kitchen prep to executive chef.  There are a number of responsibilities associated with each occupation, and team work is pertinent.  Restaurant jobs are generally plentiful and allow associates with little or no experience entrance to the workforce.  The majority of tasks may be learned on the job.  Professionals must be capable of standing, lifting, and walking, as their position mandates.  Due to the flexibility offered, these occupations are expected to remain plentiful in coming years.

Hotel employment is slightly different from the restaurant industry, but also employs a number of professionals each year.  There are five types of hotels including commercial, residential, resort, casino, and extended-stay, but all offer the same basic services to their guests.  Many Hotel jobs offer regular 40 hour per week shifts to associates in housekeeping, administrative, or clerical positions. Hours for these careers tend to be flexible and allow for unexpected staffing changes.  As with restaurant management, experienced and educated individuals in high end hotel careers are often expected to work long hours and direct a number of responsibilities.  Employees in hotels are commonly personable and flexible individuals in search of supplemental income, or flexible scheduling.  These positions are expected to remain plentiful through 2014.
